Horn of Africa hit by famine — needs to prepare for future

The Horn of Africa is once again in the grip of famine, caused by drought and political crisis. Local people depend on livestock and crops to stay alive. Their animals and crops have died from lack of water. In this FAO video, shot last year in Ethiopia, in the Horn of Africa, local herders and farmers adopt simple techniques that will save livestock and crops in time of drought or flood and avert famine. For example, emergency feeding blocks that will keep a cow alive for a week are produced from locally available materials like molasses and wheat bran. FAO wants to expand disaster preparedness as well as provide emergency seeds, tools and other provisions throughout the Horn of Africa region, and prevent famine ever occurring again.
