Could making your own pizza save water?

When you look at a pizza margherita you wouldn't think much water had gone into its production. In fact, there are many ways in which a pizza margherita uses water. High levels of water are needed to cultivate the tomatoes and to grow the crops that are fed to the dairy cows, which produce the milk for the mozzarella cheese.

A good way to minimise the water impact of your pizza is to buy one made with organic tomatoes, which do not need nitrogen fertilizers. Or why not grow your own tomatoes and make a pizza from scratch and save on the water used in industrial tomato production?
1 pizza margherita = 1216 litres water = showering for 2.5 hours
- pizza margherita weighing 725 g produced in Italy
- showering for about 5 minutes = 40 litres
