The winddrinker: clean drinking water for all

The winddrinker was the TEDxAmsterdam award in 2010. Carla Generaal and her team produced clean drinking water for the first time in Somaliland.

The winddrinker is a low-tech, low-cost and low-maintenance way, which involves a windmill, water pump, transmission, and a desalination membrane, to turn salt water into affordable and clean water. The Somaliland team worked extremely hard under supervision of Bas Heijman (Delft University of Technology). He was there for 10 days with the goal to install this innovate system and they achieved it successfully. But every situation is different; that’s why Carla developed a software model calculating the best model considering all circumstances.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes.
