Saving our freshwater ecologies

The extinction rate of species in freshwater ecologies is estimated to be almost five times higher than those on land.
A project led by the South African National Biodiversity Institute and managed by the CSIR aims to identify a national network of freshwater conservation areas.
The research will focus on large river ecosystems as well as wetlands, estuaries and groundwater. When this research is completed, South Africa will have a national map of exact priorities for fresh water biodiversity.
