Crop wild relatives – a key asset for sustainable agriculture

Since the beginnings of agriculture, crop wild relatives have been used as a source of traits to improve the yields and nutritional quality of crops. Climate change is a major threat for these species. But at the same time crop wild relatives are a crucial part of the solution for addressing the impact of climate change on agriculture.

Ehsan Dulloo (Conservation and Availability Programme Leader at Bioversity International) and Nigel Maxted (Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, UK, and PGR Secure Project Coordinator) explain why crop wild relatives are important and how monitoring, conserving and using them is critical to make agriculture more sustainable in the face of climate change.
