In most developing countries, agriculture accounts for over 80 per cent of water use. Focussing on this sector is, therefore, critical to addressing the water crisis.
According to IFAD, water and land cannot be treated as separate issues for smallholder farmers. Interventions targeting only land or only water-related issues are unlikely to achieve sustainable impact.
The following videos illustrate the land-water relationship; and some interventions that were successful because they recognised it.
At 1600 GMT today (May 18) TheWaterChannel will hold a webinar addressing this important issue, placing it in the context of the current global food crisis (‘Innovations for Food Security: The Business of Sustainable Land and Water Management’).
