Learning from History: Utilizing Abundance, Managing Scarcity
We have inherited a rich legacy of water management from our ancestors: MEGA dams, HUGE reservoirs and BIG distribution systems. But also of conserving forests, harvesting rain and preventing soil erosion, issues that are increasingly defining the modern water management agenda. Our latest feature discusses this further with more thoughts and videos.
This idea is supported further by ‘…Traditional Irrigation Systems & Methods of Water Harvesting in Hadramout & Shabwah Governorates.’ This recent book aims to document traditional techniques and institutions from Yemen (some more than 3,000 years old!) developed in arid, water-scarce regions. We would do well to learn from them. (Click here for more info, and to download the book).
