Did you know that erosion may cause earthquakes? There is a theory that deposition of sediments alters the loading of the earth’s crust and tectonic stresses in its interior. We don't know if this theory is true, but the amount of eroded land is overwhelming!
The Yellow River is named after the color of the suspended fine sediment. Over a billion ton of sediment is transported by the Yellow River each year. The Yellow River is not the only river carrying large amounts of soil; the Ganges annually dumps 95 million tons in the Bengal Bay, the Blue Nile transports lots of sediments from the Ethiopian highlands into Sudan, and the Mississippi River delta is the most rapidly eroding coast in the USA.
