Creating Pastures in African Drylands using RoadWater Harvesting
Date and Time
- June 12, 2019
- 1400 Central Europe Summer Time; 1500 East Africa Time;
Description
Pasture is needed to rear livestock, to produce milk and meat. What about drylands, where pastures are scarce?
This webinar discusses preliminary results of research being carried out in Kitui County, Kenya. The research is exploring whether a combination of growing indigenous grasses and harvesting water from roads could be the answer. It is being carried out at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) with involvement of local farmers.
What types of grasses are best suited for such efforts (biomass, nutritional values, and relationship with soil moisture)? What are some of the best practices? What is the future of pasture in drylands? These are some of the topics that are discussed in the webinar.
