5. Abel: “I am a student of Climate Change” (Local Grass for Dry Areas)

Abel has started dairy farming after a field day with a successful dairy farmer. He was impressed and decided to develop his own dairy farm, focussing on growing grasses for their feed. He also does road water harvesting, and diverts it into many trenches which pass through the whole farm. He has big plans to expand his farm to cover 5 acres with grasses. Tapping any water available is his motto.

This video is part of a series on pasture production in the drylandsof Kitui, Kenya, showcases 6 select farmers. They share their lessons and experiences on various aspects: one specializes in milk production, another sells hay, while yet another does seed production and livestock fattening simultaneously. They are all pioneers, venturing into active cultivation of grass. This is a new practice in the area, so they have an important role in their communities, showing and teaching others the importance of pasture production. Watch and learn from these role models!
