The contiguous Indus basin irrigation system irrigates an area of about 16 million ha. In spite of a massive irrigation network, in rural areas, almost 80% of the people are poor. Farmers are not getting enough profit. One of the reasons is that farmers keep on doing old-fashioned agricultural activities, which do not bring good profit to the area.
Thanks to the World Bank greenhouse project, Sindhi farmers started to install greenhouses in their fields. With a greenhouse dissemination project, some farmers started to use new, efficient irrigation tools and different planting techniques for the first time. As a result, farmers have a good profit from their fields.
If farmers stop doing old-fashioned farming activities, the Pakistani economy can improve significantly.
