Community Garden is the way to make people from different cultures understand their environment and explore opportunities for innovative uses of the green spaces. Annet van Hoorn is one of Amsterdams main inspirators and coordinator of urban transition, benefiting the city with more functional green and also leading the unification of people from all backgrounds. She is also the main coordinator of the initiative Groene Ruimte Maken (Making Green Space).
In this video, the neighbors at Speelmanstraat in Amsterdam are turning these public spaces of green that were useless before, into vegetable and flower gardens.
Usually, there is no place to sit in the street, there are many cars and the green is dirty. The garden is a meeting place in the street: its design and construction is done by the residents, and everything is permitted, as long as it does not constitute a nuisance or danger. Also this initiative is accompanied by workshops about healthy food, soil and garden design. It is time to share and know each other’s ideas on the street!
