The CSIR is studying the ecological health of two river catchments in the Waterberg in South Africa’s Limpopo basin. Researchers are developing indicators that will tell the story of the area’s current health, enabling them to predict future changes. During the study the researchers discovered a rare species of protozoa, never before cited in Africa, or in a river. This species is extremely sensitive to heavy metals in water and occurs only in water with very high light penetration.
