In Ethiopia, most unpaved, low-volume rural roads (also known as feeder roads) are constructed through an employment guarantee program called the Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP). The planning of the roads is done in consultation with rural communities, who also benefit from the employment created opportunities in the road construction process. The roads, of course, also improve connectivity of villages to urban centres and markets.
There are, however, important differentials between the benefits brought by roads to women and men in terms of employment opportunities and mobility. The (ongoing) research project ‘Gender Mainstreaming in Rural Road Development and Use in Ethiopia’ investigates how gender and roads intersect in rural Ethiopia.
