Green Roads Webinar Series: Roadside Spring Protection to improve Water Security and Road Sustainability

The construction of roads in mountainous regions presents significant challenges to both vital spring water resources and the sustainability of road infrastructure. When springs are disturbed during road construction, without proper hydrological assessments and construction techniques, they either move their course or dry up, or cause damage to the roads themselves. Therefore, it is essential to integrate spring preservation measures into road development practices.

This webinar showcased theĀ Roadside Spring Protection (RoSPro) project, which adheres to the Roadside Spring Protection approach outlined in the Green Roads Toolkit under Theme 3: Water and Land Management. The RoSPro project serves as a valuable case study, demonstrating the successful application of this approach in Dhankuta Municipality and Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality in Nepal. Discussions highlighted the interactions between spring water systems and road construction, as well as effective measures and methods to mitigate potential impacts. The webinar also explored opportunities for scaling up this approach beyond its current pilot phase.

You can access the webinar recording below. The presentation materials will soon be available on theĀ ADB Portal.
