The SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) satellite improves the ability to forecast water availability around the globe. The total amount of water is constant, however, some areas receive more than others. Mapping the future of water availability is crucial in a world with a growing population. SMAP helps to take the right actions to mitigate water surpluses and scarcities.
Soil moisture contains a lot of information on water. First of all, it is the layer of earth which controls evaporation into the atmosphere. It can also help to predict floods and the layer of the crops’ roots.
