The Rhine Delta is home to several big urban settlements, spanning across The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. What are the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the demand, supply, and consumption of food in the region… in a context of global food value chains? In this presentation, Dirk Wascher from Alterra (Wageningen University) discusses this question. He proposes viewing agricultural land as being composed of ‘global’ and ‘local’ acres, indicating which markets a particular piece of land is catering to. This will help achieve a better appraisal of the water and carbon footprint of food, and facilitate better planning to help lessen it.
