The dam of Millingerwaard is the control valve of the Netherlands. It determines how much water goes to the Waal, and how much to the Lower Rhine and the IJssel. In the Millingerwaard, old secondary channels will be excavated. Forests will be cut down, so that at very high water more water can go through the floodplain and flow into the Waal.
