Sahena Begum, president of the local women’s committee in Kunderpara village (Bangladesh), is a strong case for putting women at the centre of disaster-preparedness efforts. Like most women in her community, she is the one who grows & prepares food, collects water and fuel and takes care of children, in her household. So, “if women are aware then families can be saved from many losses,” she says. Sahena completed a course in disaster protection run by Oxfam and its local partners. She has now taken it upon herself to prepare other women in her community as well.
