Water-Source of Conflict

Water-related conflict can be mitigated based on scientific evaluation, participation, public dialogue and integration.

Water scientists and policymakers widely believe that knowledge/ awareness must be built within a conflict-prevention framework rather than a conflict-resolution one.

For cultural and historical reasons, institutional partners from different South Mediterranean countries face quite often the reality of possible trans-boundary water conflicts and are reluctant to dialogue. The MELIA Project, with participation by stakeholders from various categories across the Mediterranean countries (a total of 45 partners) is an important milestone and essential to help the EC towards affirming proper Euro-Mediterranean co-operation.
