Dhuxunka is a small village in the mountains of the Awda region in northwest Somaliland. Never before has a relief organisation been active here. The biggest problem is the lack of water. There are no wells, the nearest one is 5 kilometres away, the groundwater is too deep to reach. The only option: collecting run-off surface water in cisterns, which are called berkad here. The work for digging the pit is done by the community, a six-month long effort for which Welthungerhilfe provides tools.
