Icy fun

Floodplains are the areas between the river and its dikes. During winter, water levels of rivers can reach their peak, inundating the floodplains. Ice skaters make great use of this phenomenon.
These floodplains in Wageningen (The Netherlands) were assigned for construction in the 60s. Due to changes in perspectives on water management, it was later decided to create more room for the river instead. This increases safety when the water level peaks and contributes to nature conservation and recreation as well.
