Farmer Jackson is always up to try a new method which is promising for his farm. He for example requested the road authorities to divert the road runoff into his farm, where he takes it to all sides of his farm in order to increase his water availability. He is also one of the pioneers of producing seeds in the area, which he sells to farmers around. Another activity he does is animal fattening, he cleverly buys weak cows in the market, he fattens them with his pasture and fodder, and sells at a better price. All in all, making good money.
This video is part of a series on pasture production in the drylandsof Kitui, Kenya, showcases 6 select farmers. They share their lessons and experiences on various aspects: one specializes in milk production, another sells hay, while yet another does seed production and livestock fattening simultaneously. They are all pioneers, venturing into active cultivation of grass. This is a new practice in the area, so they have an important role in their communities, showing and teaching others the importance of pasture production. Watch and learn from these role models!
