The Hayayabe Canyon is expanding year after year, devastating pastures and fields. This is due to the lack of rainfall, which weakens the vegetation, and torrential heavy rains, which wash away the cracked soil. Drought-resistant acacias that survive this are sacrificed to the charcoal market of the nearby small town of Borama. Welthungerhilfe has had a project office there for 16 years and has been fighting against erosion together with farmers and pastoralists.
