Global cities like Tokyo, London, Sydney and New York must confront the challenge of rising sea levels this century because rising tides will threaten to leave large parts of their areas underwater. The island nation of the Maldives, which will be completely underwater by the end of the century, is already redesigning how it will exist and is constructing a series of floating structures and communities.
