Bangladesh: The importance of desilting Khals (drainage canals)

Bangladesh’s polder areas are criss-crossed by ‘khals’or drainage canals.

Khals get silted up from time to time…and this is a key obstruction to the proper movement of water within the polders. This invariably leads to waterlogging and renders productive land underutilized.

In Mushrikathi (Polder 43/2B, Mushrikathi district), excavation of a silted khal has helped 250 families farm profitably again.
