Zabid is one of the oldest towns of Yemen and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of late, the city of 23,000 has been suffering from poor sanitation infrastructure—a health hazard and a physical threat to historical buildings. In 2003, a Yemeni-German project put in place modern sanitation infrastructure that has improved the situation considerably. Its maintenance, however, has been full of challenges that the government and people of Zabid have been trying to negotiate together.
