Farmer Managed Drainage Well Sanghar

Pakistan’s Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) project is one of world’s largest drainage projects. The goal was to bring higher crop yields to farmers through the reclamation of saline and waterlogged farmland but due to managemement and energy crises in Sanghar many LBOD tubewells are not working anymore.

The LBOD Project is an environmental improvement project which was conceived in the 1960s as a response to the problem of rising water tables and resulting water logging and salinity. Some farmers took initiative and were not only responsible for maintenance but also for operation and security. As a result of this responsibility, farmers prevented water logging in their areas.

Each year, Pakistan loses about 25 percent of its potential crop production equivalent to US$2.5 billion due to salinity.
