Introducing low-cost greenhouse in peri-urban Addis Ababa

Three farming families in the immediate vicinity of Addis Ababa embarked on a two year pilot to grow horticultural crops in newly built low-cost greenhouses. Financed by the Ethiopia- Netherlands Trade for Agricultural Growth (ENTAG) innovation fund, the aim of the pilot is to boost farmers income through the cropping of horticultural crops in greenhouses. Enabling off-season market access by means of access to low-cost and innovative technologies (greenhouses, solar pumps, waterpads, drip irrigation). The pilot opened up new means as well as crops, the evaluation of the costs and benefits will determine the potential of upscaling, however part if not all technologies have proven to enable harvesting of ‘new’ crops by participating farmers.
