Of Open Ponds and Water Fasts

The Suru Reservoir in Adami Tuli district of Ethiopia is an open pond with over 15,000 people dependent on it for their water supply. First developed in 1970, it had shrunk over over the years due to excessive silting. Also, its waters mixed with impurities and neigbouring ponds during incessant floods.

This made the neighbouring communities water-stressed, as the nearest river is 15 kilometeres away. ‘Water-Fasts’–drawing water only on alternate days– became widespread.

Since early 2011, a group of Ethiopian and Dutch organisations are trying to improve the situation through a combination of strategies- desilting, encouraging water-treatment in households and promoting easily manageable maintenance techniques.
