In September 2014, Pakistan’s Punjab province was hit by the most destructive floods in 50 years. 283 lives were lost; 2.4 million acres of prime agricultural land was flooded; 100,000 houses were damaged; half-a-million people were displaced; and 1000 roads were either completely washed away or greatly damaged.
Destruction of such large scale demanded an equally big relief effort. Apart from the first-reponse relief and rescue, helplines were set up to assist the victims; provincial and local committees were set up to supervise food, water, sanitation, health, nutrition, livestock rehab and damage assessment; periodic assessment was made of water quality; affected areas were mapped, affected properties were geo-tagged to record the damage accurately and track it in real time.
