Restoring Indonesia’s Peatland

Full title: Restoring Indonesia’s Peatland. Rehabilitating and Revitalising Central Kalimantan’s Ex-Mega Rice Project.

The Mega Rice Project began in 1996 with the construction of an extensive canal network. Despite local protests and warnings from experts, the project was taken forwards and implemented without adequate planning and knowledge of the system. The results were far from what was hoped for and in 1999 the project was stopped.
This video shows the effects of the project 8 years after the project was stopped. In March 2007, the president of Indonesia announced a programme to rehabilitate 1.1 million hectares of the area for conservation: the Master Plan.
