The dams of the Gendtsche Waard – the Suikerdam and the Polderkade – are so high that the floodplain during high water is flooded, but the water in the floodplain never flow with the river. By creating openings in the dams, the water can flow in and out the floodplain. This will increase the discharge capacity of the Waal and the water level will decrease.
