Salmon is the Main Course

Ah, Fresno in April. The birds chirping, the sounds of baby salmon being ground-up in the pumps, the smell of alfalfa in the morning as the selenium and pesticide residues leech deeply into the aquifer. A perfect setting for a Congressional committee hearing.

The House Natural Resources Committee’s Water and Power Subcommittee held a field hearing in Fresno recently. They called it, “Creating Jobs by Overcoming Man-Made Drought: Time for Congress to Listen and Act.” Certainly an important subject. One salmon fisherman was invited to speak. The room was packed. For the most part, the Republican majority committee members, the agriculture and water irrigator speakers, and most of the assembled audience did not like what that fisherman had to say. This video provides a look at the politics and political theater of that hearing in Fresno.
