Water Productivity

Instinctively in Agriculture productivity is associated with the amount of output per unit area of land. We are used to the idea of productivity being defined as tonnes or quintals of crop per hectare. However, as agriculture is by far the world’s largest water user (70% of total water withdrawn each year), and the limits to using new water are being reached and competition between uses and users is increasing, it is important to consider how and what is being produced with the water. A call for thinking of agricultural productivity also in terms of Water Productivity.

This dossier brings together videos, background information, the developments in open source monitoring of water productivity and potential solutions stimulating an increase in water productivity.
