A Non-Californian’s Guide to the Whacky World of California Water: A Video Primer (19:32) Ok, Californian’s, this video is not for you (but please watch, anyway). This video is for the rest of America. It’s for your family and friends who don’t live in The Golden State. This video is was made to counter the misinformation, that since 2009 has been spewing from supposedly respectable national media about the state’s water crisis and agriculture.
To understand why we’ve made this video, do this little exercise and see for yourself what answers you get. Ask a non-Californian if they know anything about problems facing California agriculture. Phrase the question anyway you’d like, We think the answer you’ll get is that farmers in California are suffering because (radical) environmentalists are trying to save a two-inch fish, forcing the government to turn off irrigation water. They might add that farmers are going bankrupt, farm fields are being fallowed, and food prices are going to go up because of this madness. Go ahead, test our thesis. The reality is, of course, much more complex. But two years of intentional distortions takes a toll on the truth. Add grandstanding politicians and sloppy reporting by news organizations that should know better and you have an American population with incomplete information at best, or misinformation at worst. Now, we’ll be the first to acknowledge this video has a point-of-view but it’s a perspective on California’s water story that has not been told nearly enough.
For those who have seen some or all of Salmon Water Now videos, you’ll see some familiar segments. We’ve taken portions of other videos, added new material and structured a story that explains the plight of people and salmon. It’s our way to shine a light on what has been so wrong for so long. Please, share this video with friends and family who live outside of California. Hell, share it with everyone you know. California’s world of water is whacky and this video will provide a perspective that the most powerful water users would rather America not think about. Because the last thing they want to admit is that salmon need salmon water, now!
