A large number of the population of the Eastern and Southern Coast of Sri Lanka, dealt with improper sanitation facilites after the tsunami and other floods. The pit latrines they were using overflowed either by overland inflow, or raising groundwater tables. Besides the impossibility to use sanitation facilities, the interference of groundwater with human excreta in the pit latrines, also contaminated drinking water of surrounding drinking water wells. In this first part of the documentary “Green Toilet Talks” different parties explained the problems faced using the old toilet system, as well as the integral solution found to tackle these problems and actually make a benefit of the toilet systems.
