Hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved from the 2004 Asian Tsunami, if adequate early warning systems were in place. Additionally, fishermen lost their livelihoods, with over two-thirds of all fishing boats destroyed.
This video records experiences of some victims from coastal communities in Sri Lanka who were taken by surprise; and how an IDRC project that aims to build early warning mechanisms has helped improve their preparedness.
