Managing stormwater- Recharge wells for zero discharge sites

Urban flooding is a new phenomena taking lives and causing damage in Bangalore too. Through simple systems like a recharge well, each household can provide solutions by taking ALL the rainwater falling on its site – from the rooftops and the paved and unpaved land- and putting it into the ground. This increases the groundwater table levels and, aquifer permitting, ensures that well water is available in summer. It also dramatically reduces water shortage of the city and prevents urban flooding.

Mrs Hemalata, who has 2 rain barrels and a recharge well, explains how she was one of the first to adopt this strategy in the layout that she resides Rainbow Drive, Bangalore. The recharge well can take a 60 mm rainfall in a day and put it below the ground without a single drop going as run-off. This is the best design criteria for Bangalore city’s distribution of rainfall. Each household then becomes part of the solution and not part of the problem.
