“Plastic soup” is a vivid description for a sea polluted by broken-up particles of old plastic. It is sometimes thought that plastic soup occurs only in the major gyres of our oceans. However, such soup becomes visible anywhere, where wind, waves and currents concentrate rubbish floating in the water. It happens in the Netherlands and also in that beautiful blue Mediterranean Sea. If one goes snorkling in places where the soup is formed, one wonders what on earth we are doing?
