Groundwater is the lifeline of semi arid India. Devanahalli near Bangalore is such an area. Dotted with many open wells now dry, farmers depend on bore-wells which have gone as deep as 1000 feet yet in many there is no water. The tanks which used to hold rainwater and allow it to percolate are now dysfunctional. Unless the whole system is restored and a cap is placed on extraction, livelihoods of many will be threatened.
