Floods sweeping down the Alpine valleys and across the torn lands of Piedmont and Lombardy, ruining the lands of thousands of North Italian farmers and peasants. Melting snows combined with the worst June rain storms in living memory cause the disaster. Floods and land slides have locked the upper valley.
