Stormwater in a city – Managing through design

Stormwater from asphalted roads contributes 25 to 40% of the water that needs to be managed during rain. Conventionally, stormwater drains have been designed to carry away the water from a layout/neighbourhood/city. Reworking the stormwater drain to hold water and percolate it into the bed of the drain itself or into recharge wells is another way of managing stormwater. This not only takes care of the excess water flooding roads but also augments the groundwater.
Here is one such example from the layout called Utopia in Bangalore.
