Agroecology
Agroecology is a holistic approach that applies ecological and social principles across food systems, aiming to produce food in ways that regenerate natural resources while strengthening communities and local economies. Rather than relying heavily on external synthetic inputs, agroecology promotes diversified, locally adapted farming systems that integrate crops, livestock, trees, soils, water, and people within resilient agroecosystems.
Rather than representing a new concept, agroecology builds on traditionally rooted agricultural knowledge and practices that work in harmony with natural processes. Agroecological systems contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation by enhancing carbon sequestration, diversifying production systems, and restoring ecological balance. Practices such as biological pest management, production of bio-inputs, soil biota management, ecological restoration, watershed conservation, and the integration of productive biodiversity help reduce dependency on chemical inputs while improving long-term farm resilience. Equally important is the social dimension of agroecology, which values traditional knowledge, farmer innovation, equity, and community wellbeing as essential components of sustainable food systems.
